Located in the Mexican state of Sinoloa about 50 miles north of Mazatlan, Lake El Salto was created in 1986 with the damming of the Elota River. The result is a remote reservoir that sprawls across 25,000 acres during the rainy months and 17,000 acres during the latter portion of the bass season.
in the early 1990s, Lake El Salto Mexico gained a reputation for producing big numbers of small fish with an occasional trophy. Anglers witnessed a drastic change, however, as the lake erupted with a rash of quality and trophy bass up to 15 pounds. With a year-round growing season and a growth rate estimated by Mexican biologists at an unbelievable 2 pounds per year, an enormous crop of 7- to 14-pound bass now swim in the tropical waters of Lake El Salto.
